Can You Find Sciatica Relief In Your Neck?

Sciatica Relief

What Is Sciatica?

Sciatica is a terrible nagging, sometimes debilitating pain. An estimated 40% of people will experience sciatica at some point in their lives. In some cases, the pain can last for a few weeks. For many people, that irritation will return periodically. For others, pain can last for months or years.

The sciatic nerve goes from the lower back, through the hips, buttocks, and down the leg. The focus for sciatic nerve pain is usually in these areas, but you may be surprised to learn that the root of your problem could be a bit higher up—in your neck.

Signs and Causes of Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is a large nerve that branches from the lower back and goes down through the legs. When this nerve becomes pinched or compressed, it causes inflammation and irritation. Accidents, injuries, prolonged sitting, or obesity may cause sciatica. Many women will experience it during pregnancy, and it is also a common problem that comes with old age.

Pain is the most common symptom of sciatica, which is usually felt in the lower back/buttock area and may go partly or all the way down the leg. The severity of the pain can vary from person to person, but in extreme cases, it can be excruciating and make walking very difficult.

Sciatica may cause tingling, numbness, or weakness in the leg and foot on the afflicted side. In rare cases, sciatica may interfere with bowel or bladder control.

Sciatica Treatments

For most people, sciatica will resolve as the injury heals. Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or exercising, can also help. Until it resolves, patients can manage the pain with heat and/or ice, anti-inflammatory medication, or physical therapy. In more serious cases, doctors may prescribe anticonvulsants or may recommend surgery as a last resort.

Many people find relief from sciatica by getting chiropractic care. The compression of the sciatic nerve is often due to a misalignment in the spine, and having the spine adjusted is the best way to get to the root of the problem and find relief.

In many cases, the upper cervical spine is where the trouble begins. This part of the spine runs from the base of the skull through the neck and is a very vulnerable area that is prone to injuries. When the upper cervical spine is misaligned, it throws off the rest of the musculoskeletal system. Bringing the upper cervical spine back into alignment opens the way for the rest of the body to restore itself.
